Birds

So I’ve been keeping up with Thing a Day pretty well. I’ve only drawn four birds, but I went to the store and got more colored pencils, so more will be on the way!

This is my male cardinal, I really like how he came out, but I wasn’t a fan of the background. I tried to blend it and then I got tired……so it’s good. There’s actually more shading then my scanner picked up. That happened with all the birds drawings. So they are just a little better then pictured here.

This is my female cardinal. I used a stylus to incise some lines and I really like how it came out……ok, I used a mechanical pencil tip, but that worked too! I didn’t even try with the background here. I really need to start working on my colored pencil backgrounds. It’s definitely going to take time. I just made enough of the background to bring out the bird.

Hummingbirds fascinate me. I’ll probably draw another one. I don’t get to see them often, I think I’ve maybe see three in my life. Beautiful creatures though.

My favorite is still the golden finch (the first one I did, on the last post). I’m glad I made this post, I think I just re-inspired myself to draw some more birds. I was going to draw peach faced love birds for Vday, but I never got around too it. To much work. Maybe I’ll draw them later.

Late ATCs

I have a bad habit of either A) not feeling it or B) just being lazy….and so my ATCs tend to get sent out later then the due date. This is not fair for my partners. Even though they get the ATC and usually some fun extras….I should be able to be discplined enough to get them out on time! So my new goal is just that. Get my ATCs out before the due date! Let’s do this thing!

I tried to do another variation on the fish swimming out of the window into the sky again. Once again, it’s not exactly what I was going for, but I think it’s cute. This was my surreal theme.

My favorite horse is the Friesian. I absolutely love these majestic creatures. I am however…not very good at painting black things….so these horses are normally gray, but that’s what he is in my picture. I attempted a fall like background, which colorful leaves.  It looks washed out here, but that white has bright yellow actually. I’m okay with how this one came out. I haven’t drawn horses for a long time.

This is my happy buddha. I like how he came out. For the highlights I used art masking fluid, and then tried to drag some of the color over it, because they really were Highlights! Then I did a fun watercolor wash for the background…there are more pinks, reds, and oranges then my scanner picked up. Then I made the background, which really added to it. This is probably my favorite of any I’ve done in awhile.

My last art swap’s theme was ‘The Mess of Me’. I just had to incorperate everything I could that was ‘me’ on one card. It was harder to do then I imagined, and it didn’t quite come out like I had hoped it would. I think I might try this again in my sketchbook. It’s a fun idea to play with.

And on another note, my first christmas craft was…a fail…but I learned from in and the second one looks much better. So I’m still spending a lot of time on that.

Happy Holidays!

ATCs

I drew these a week ago, but I’m just getting around to posting them now. Tomorrow is going to be a big drawing day I feel, so hopefully I’ll have something to post again this week.

autumn

This one I had to create an ATC that had to do with Autumn. I don’t like how teh colored pencils worked out, I think I just need to learn how to draw with them better. Or I need to find a brand I like better, cause I’m not the biggest fan of the one I use currently.

artistic 3

Once again I was trying to work with colored pencils and not doing that great. I’ve been doing very simple things lately and now I feel like I need to start a project that is going to take some time and more effort.

Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun

So I needed to do a painting for one of my art swaps. I’ve been very intimidated by this because I’ve never done a painting for anyone else. It’s the biggest acrylic painting I’ve ever attempted (5×7 – don’t laugh) and I used Van Gogh’s ‘Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun’ as my subject. (I think that’s what it’s called, but I’m not positive). It is my favorite painting by him.

Now…please don’t laugh…..this one is mine.

Picture 005

I know it’s fuzzy. I had to take a picture because I could not scan the painting because of the texture. And I couldn’t use a flash because it is so shiny. But that’s it. I like it, I really hope my swap partner does too. I’m going to paint another one for myself.

I used plastic palette knives to get the texture and I really do enjoy working with paint like that. We shall see what else I come up with. I know I promised a ‘Starry Night’ for one of my roommates. :)

Bar Sketches

basket

I was out to dinner with some friends and we were watching a basketball game. One of them commented on two players saying “It’s like they put a marshmellow out there to guard a Doberman!” Of course I had to draw it.

rain

It’s been pouring for days now. On and off. Of course I know this saying and one of my challenges from awhile ago was to create something with cats and dogs. I’m just kind of annoyed that I didn’t give my gal a neck.

I might add color to these sketches later just for fun. My sketchbook is rather more black and white then I care for.

I think today I’m going to go outside and draw, if the weather holds. Right now it’s beautiful outside. Oh, and I titled this entry bar sketches because when I really really need to get out of the house I’ll go to the bar down the street and just doodle. I meet the nicest person, another artist, and we eneded up talking for hours. It’s amazing what pleasant conversation does for the soul.
